Visitors often arrive thinking Trinidad Carnival is one event. It's three, packed into about 36 hours, and they feel almost nothing alike. Understanding the difference is the difference between planning a good Carnival and accidentally missing the part you came for.
J'ouvert — Monday, Before Dawn
Starts in darkness around 3–4AM on Carnival Monday and runs to mid-morning. No costume: cheap clothes you'll throw away, covered in paint, powder, mud and oil. A music truck, a crowd chipping behind it, and the sun coming up on a few thousand unrecognisable people. It's the oldest, rawest and — ask any Trinidadian — often the best part of the whole thing.
Carnival Monday Mas — Monday, From Late Morning
After J'ouvert, people shower, sleep and come back out. Monday mas is the relaxed cousin of Tuesday: partial costume, shorts and a band t-shirt, monday wear rather than full regalia. Same bands, same trucks, far less pressure — a long, warm afternoon on the road with none of the intensity of either bookend.
Carnival Tuesday — Pretty Mas, All Day
The one that ends up on postcards. Full costume — feathers, beads, headpieces, wire bra — worn across the stage and through the streets from morning until the evening. It's the most expensive, most photographed and most physically demanding day, and for many masqueraders it's the culmination the whole season has been building toward.

Can You Do All Three?
Yes, and many people do — it's the classic Carnival Monday: J'ouvert at 4AM, home by mid-morning, shower, a few hours' sleep, back on the road by afternoon, then Tuesday in costume. It is genuinely exhausting and genuinely worth it. Just build the nap into the plan rather than assuming you'll cope.
If You Can Only Play One
If you want the spectacle, the costume and the photographs, play Tuesday. If you want the thing that Carnival actually *is* — the history, the release, the anonymity, the moment the sun comes up on the crowd — play J'ouvert. It costs a fraction of the price, it asks nothing of you but old clothes and a willingness to get dirty, and it's the part people talk about for the rest of the year.
Where Ash Wednesday Comes In
Carnival ends at midnight on Tuesday, and Ash Wednesday is the national comedown — beaches, Maracas, quiet, and a country collectively recovering. It's not part of the mas, but if you're planning a trip, leave the Wednesday free. Nobody is doing anything strenuous that day.
