What is J'ouvert?

J'ouvert (from the French Creole 'jour ouvert' — daybreak) is the paint-and-powder street party that opens Trinidad Carnival every year. Starting around 3–4AM on Carnival Monday, thousands of revellers chip through the streets of Port of Spain to soca music until sunrise.

What's included in the WE J'ouvert package?

Accepted Answer

Everything: a music truck, open bar (rum, beers, vodka, shots station, water and juices), breakfast on the road, paint, Abir powder, a water truck, and security coverage for the full route.

What time does WE J'ouvert start?

Accepted Answer

We touch road at approximately 4:00 AM on Carnival Monday. Be at the launch point by 3:30 AM. J'ouvert does not wait — if you miss the start you miss the best of it.

Where does the band start and end?

The launch point is in Port of Spain. The route chips through the capital and winds up near the Savannah by mid-morning. Exact route details are released closer to Carnival and are available in the downloadable Band Route PDF on the Experience page.

What should I wear to J'ouvert?

Cheap white or light-coloured clothing you're happy to discard after — a plain white t-shirt and shorts are perfect. Comfortable old shoes you don't mind ruining. Everything will be covered in paint. Full guide on our blog.

Will the paint wash off?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The paint and Abir powder used by WE J'ouvert washes off with soap and water over a few showers. It may stain light-coloured swimwear or clothing, so wear dedicated J'ouvert clothes.

Is J'ouvert safe?

WE J'ouvert provides dedicated security for the full route. Playing with an organised all-inclusive band is significantly safer than navigating the streets independently, especially for first-timers. Stay with the band, mind your belongings, and enjoy.

Can I come if I've never been to Trinidad Carnival before?

Absolutely — first-timers are welcome and play alongside veterans every year. WE J'ouvert is a great entry point because the all-inclusive structure takes care of everything so you can focus on the experience.

How do I register?

Visit our Register page, choose your package (Early Bird or Standard), and complete payment via credit/debit card. You'll receive a confirmation email with your ticket details.

What currencies do you accept?

We accept both TTD (Trinidad & Tobago Dollars) and USD. Prices are shown in both currencies and you can toggle between them on the site. Payment is processed securely via WiPay.

What happens if it rains?

J'ouvert happens rain or shine — it's Trinidad Carnival, the weather is part of the vibes. Rain actually makes the paint and powder even more fun. The event is not cancelled for rain.

When is J'ouvert 2027?

Accepted Answer

J'ouvert 2027 falls on Carnival Monday, 8 February 2027, before dawn. Carnival Tuesday is 9 February 2027 and Ash Wednesday is 10 February 2027. The dates move every year because Carnival is fixed to the two days before Ash Wednesday.

How long does J'ouvert last?

Around six hours. WE J'ouvert touches road at approximately 4:00 AM and chips through Port of Spain until mid-morning. You don't have to stay for all of it, but the band is on the road until the route is finished.

How much does a J'ouvert band cost?

Accepted Answer

All-inclusive J'ouvert packages in Trinidad generally start around US$70 and run past US$100 depending on the band and how early you book. Early Bird is the cheapest WE J'ouvert tier — current prices in both TTD and USD are shown live on the Register page.

Question 16

What should I bring on the road?

As little as possible: your phone in a sealed waterproof pouch on a lanyard, a small amount of cash, your ID, and sunscreen. Playing all-inclusive means you don't need to carry money for drinks or food. Leave jewellery, cards, passports and bags behind.

Question 17

How do I get the paint off afterwards?

Accepted Answer

Oil your skin, hairline and ears with petroleum jelly or baby oil before you leave, then shower before you sleep rather than after — fresh paint rinses off far more easily than dried. Rinse cool first, then oil, then soap and warm water.

What's the difference between J'ouvert and pretty mas?

J'ouvert is the pre-dawn paint-and-powder street party that opens Carnival Monday, played in old clothes you'll throw away. 'Pretty mas' is the full-costume parade — feathers and beads — on Carnival Monday afternoon and all of Carnival Tuesday. Many masqueraders play both.

Can I register from overseas?

Yes. Registration and card payment are handled online in TTD or USD, so diaspora and international masqueraders regularly secure their spot months in advance from abroad and simply show up on Carnival Monday.

Question 20

Do I need a car to get to J'ouvert?

Accepted Answer

No, and most experienced masqueraders don't drive on Carnival Monday. Roads around the route close and you'll be getting back into the car covered in paint. Arrange a drop-off and pick-up in advance, or hire a maxi for your group.

Is there an age limit?

Accepted Answer

J'ouvert is an adult event — there's an open bar, a dense night-time crowd, and a six-hour route. Masqueraders should be 18 or over.
