Your First J'ouvert: An Hour-by-Hour Guide to What Actually Happens

Reading about J'ouvert and standing in it at 4AM are different things. If it's your first one, the useful thing isn't a list of tips — it's knowing the shape of the morning so nothing catches you off guard. Here's how it actually goes.

1:30 AM — The Alarm

You have napped, not slept. Eat something small now; you'll be drinking on the road and breakfast doesn't come until later. Put on the clothes you have already decided to throw away. Rub petroleum jelly or baby oil into your hairline, ears and any tattoos — it makes the paint come off far easier tomorrow. Phone into a waterproof pouch, and leave everything else behind.

3:15 AM — Getting There

Arrive earlier than you think you need to. Port of Spain roads close and fill on Carnival Monday, so if you're driving, park somewhere you're happy to leave a car for six hours, or take a maxi or a pre-arranged drop-off. You'll know you're close when you start seeing people in white walking in the same direction.

3:30 AM — The Launch Point

This is the calm bit. People are checking in, collecting drinks, greeting each other, and everyone is still clean — which is the last time that will be true. Find the truck. Find your people. Get a drink. Take the photo now, because in twenty minutes nobody will be recognisable.

4:00 AM — Touching Road

The truck starts moving and the whole thing begins. This is the moment. It is dark, the bass is physical, and paint starts moving through the crowd immediately — someone will get you within the first minute and it will not be the last time. Do not fight it. The people who have the worst time at J'ouvert are the ones trying to stay clean.

4:30 – 6:00 AM — The Deep Part of the Morning

This is the stretch people come back for every year. You are chipping — that slow, shuffling road walk that lets you keep moving for hours — the truck is working, the bar is open, and you are surrounded by a few thousand people who are all fully in it. Time stops being a thing you're aware of. Drink water between drinks; the free bar is a trap if you treat it as a challenge.

6:00 AM — Sunrise

The sky goes grey, then gold, and suddenly you can see everyone. This is the second best moment of the morning and the one that ends up in every photo. You will look at your friends properly for the first time in two hours and none of you will look like yourselves. Breakfast lands somewhere around here and you will be much hungrier than you expected.

7:00 – 10:00 AM — The Long Chip Home

The sun gets serious. The water truck becomes the most popular thing on the road. The energy shifts from chaos to a sort of communal, sunburnt joy — slower, sweeter, everybody hugging strangers. Sunscreen matters more than you'd think for something that started in the dark.

After — The Part Nobody Photographs

You will be exhausted, filthy, and quietly euphoric. Get water in you and get in a shower while the paint is still fresh — it comes off far more easily now than after a nap. Then sleep, because Carnival Monday afternoon is still ahead of you, and Tuesday after that.

The Five Things First-Timers Get Wrong

• Wearing something they secretly like. It will be destroyed. Assume total loss.
• Arriving late. The first hour in the dark is the whole reason to be there.
• Trying to stay clean. It signals to everybody that you're not really playing.
• Bringing a bag, a good camera, jewellery, or anything they'd be upset to lose.
• Drinking hard early because the bar is included. Six hours is a long road.
