WHAT ALL-INCLUSIVE ACTUALLY MEANS

You pay once, before Carnival, and nothing on the road costs you anything after that. No cash, no cards, no queueing to buy a drink at 5AM, no wandering off to find food. Everything below travels with the band for the full route.

The music truck

A full sound system rolling at walking pace with soca all morning, and the band chipping behind it. The truck is the band — it sets the pace, it holds the crowd together, and it is what you follow from the launch point to the end of the route.

Open bar, the whole route

Angostura rum, Forres Park puncheon, Carib, Stag, XM Royal, vodka and mixers, a shots station, and water and juices to keep you upright. Six hours is a long road — the sensible move is one water for every drink, and the water is right there.

Breakfast on the road

Food arrives around sunrise, which is exactly when you discover how hungry four hours of chipping in the dark has made you. It's included, it comes to you, and you don't need a dollar on you to get it.

Paint and Abir powder

Skin-safe paint and Abir powder, moving through the crowd continuously from the moment the truck rolls. This is the tradition — the masking that makes everybody anonymous and equal in the dark — and it is not something you should have to source yourself.

The water truck

After sunrise it becomes the most popular vehicle on the road. It cools you down, it keeps the paint moving, and it is the single best thing about the last two hours of the morning.

Washrooms that follow the band

The wee wee truck travels with us. It sounds like a small thing until you're four hours into a six-hour route in a closed-off city — then it's one of the main reasons people play all-inclusive.

Dedicated security

Security covers the full route, start to finish. J'ouvert is a very large crowd in the dark, and moving inside a staffed, organised band is the biggest safety difference available to a first-timer or a visitor.

How the morning runs

• 3:30 AM — be at the launch point. Check in, collect a drink, take the photo while everybody is still clean.
• 4:00 AM — the truck rolls and the band touches road. The paint starts moving immediately.
• 4:30–6:00 AM — the deep part of the morning. Dark, loud, and the reason people come back every year.
• Around 6:00 AM — sunrise, and breakfast on the road.
• Through mid-morning — the long chip home, with the water truck working overtime.

What you bring

Cheap white clothes you are ready to lose, old closed-toe shoes, and your phone in a waterproof pouch. That's the whole list — read what to wear and what to bring, and know how the paint comes off before you go.

Why play with a band at all

Street J'ouvert is free and it is always there. What a band buys you is everything you would otherwise be solving yourself at 4AM in an unfamiliar city: drinks, food, washrooms, water, security, and a few thousand people moving in the same direction.
