J'ouvert is not a fashion show. It's a paint-and-powder war in the dark at 3AM. The right outfit means you enjoy every second. The wrong outfit means you ruin something you love. Here's exactly what to wear.
The Golden Rule: Wear What You're Ready to Lose
Everything you wear to J'ouvert will be stained. Paint, Abir powder, mud — it all stays. Buy cheap white or light-coloured clothing specifically for the road. White shows off the paint beautifully in photos and is the traditional J'ouvert colour. Many people buy plain white t-shirts and shorts from a dollar store or thrift shop.
Top Half
A plain white or light-coloured t-shirt is perfect. Some revellers go without a shirt entirely. Avoid anything sentimental or expensive. Crop tops are popular for women and look great once painted. Bring a small waterproof bag or fanny pack for your phone and any essentials — your pockets will be soaked.
Bottom Half
Light shorts or a skirt work well. Again — cheap and light-coloured. Jeans are a mistake: they're heavy when wet and uncomfortable for hours of chipping. Board shorts or cotton shorts are ideal.
Footwear
Old sneakers or sliders/sandals that you're happy to throw away. You will be walking on wet streets, through mud sections, and around thousands of people. Closed-toe shoes give better protection if the crowd gets dense. Never wear new shoes to J'ouvert. Some people go barefoot — this is only recommended if you know the road.
What to Leave Behind
Leave your good camera at the hotel. Leave expensive jewellery. Leave your favourite bag. Bring only what fits in a small waterproof pouch: your phone (in a waterproof case), your ID, and enough cash for emergencies. If you're playing all-inclusive with WE J'ouvert, you won't need cash on the road anyway.
Phone & Camera
Get a waterproof case for your phone — they cost a few dollars and they're worth it. GoPros and action cameras work excellently at J'ouvert. Your phone camera in a clear waterproof pouch will capture everything. The paint photos are absolutely stunning.
Hair & Skin
Vaseline or petroleum jelly on your hairline and ears slows paint absorption. The paint WE J'ouvert uses washes off, but it will take a few showers. Wear your hair in a bun, braids, or under a bandana. Many revellers shave their heads entirely for Carnival week.
