The short answer: J'ouvert 2027 is on Carnival Monday, 8 February 2027, and it starts in the dark — before 4AM. Trinidad Carnival moves with the calendar every year because it is tied to Lent, so the date shifts. Here's everything around that date, and the timings that actually matter if you're planning a trip.
The Key Dates
- J'ouvert morning — Monday 8 February 2027, from before dawn (WE J'ouvert touches road at approximately 4:00 AM)
- Carnival Monday 'pretty mas' — Monday 8 February 2027, from late morning into the evening
- Carnival Tuesday — Tuesday 9 February 2027, the full-costume parade of the bands, all day
- Ash Wednesday — Wednesday 10 February 2027, everything stops and the beaches fill up
The Carnival season itself starts long before that. Fetes, band launches and cooler parties run from around Christmas through to Carnival weekend, and the last week — from roughly the preceding Thursday — is when the calendar becomes wall-to-wall.
Why the Date Changes Every Year
Carnival Monday and Tuesday are the two days immediately before Ash Wednesday, which is set by the date of Easter. That's why Carnival can land anywhere from early February to early March. If you see a fixed 'Carnival is always on X' claim anywhere, ignore it — always check the year you're travelling for.
What Time Should You Actually Arrive?
Be at the launch point by 3:30 AM. WE J'ouvert touches road at approximately 4:00 AM and the band does not wait. The first hour is the best hour — the road is dark, the paint is fresh, the crowd is at its loudest, and everything after that is the sun slowly coming up on people already covered. If you arrive at 5AM you have missed the part you paid for.
How Long Does J'ouvert Last?
Plan for around six hours on your feet. WE J'ouvert runs from roughly 4:00 AM to mid-morning, chipping through Port of Spain as the light comes up. You do not have to stay for all of it — plenty of people peel off once the sun is high — but the band is on the road until it finishes the route.
Sleep, Realistically
Nobody sleeps normally on Carnival Sunday night. The common approach is to nap in the evening, get up around 1–2AM, get to the launch point for 3:30, play J'ouvert until mid-morning, then shower, eat and sleep for a few hours before Monday-night mas. Trying to do a full night's sleep and a 3AM wake-up rarely works — plan for the nap.
When to Book
Book earlier than feels necessary. Flights into Piarco for Carnival week and accommodation in and around Port of Spain both go early and both get expensive as the date approaches. Band spots follow the same pattern — Early Bird pricing exists precisely because the band fills up, and WE J'ouvert has sold out every year. Registration for 2027 is the one thing you can lock in months ahead.
Not Waiting Until February?
There's a second Carnival on the calendar. Tobago hosts its own October Carnival, and WE J'ouvert keeps a running countdown and event list for the other dates we're on the road — band launches, hikes, fetes and our 1K/5K road race at the Queen's Park Savannah. Check the events page for what's next.
