Getting to J'ouvert in Port of Spain: Transport, Parking and Where to Stay

The logistics of a 4AM start in a city with closed roads are the part first-timers plan last and regret first. None of it is difficult — it just has to be decided before Carnival Sunday night, because you are not solving transport problems at 3AM covered in anticipation.

Where You're Going

WE J'ouvert launches from Port of Spain and chips through the capital as the sun comes up. The exact launch point and route are confirmed closer to Carnival and published to registered masqueraders — the downloadable band route is on the experience page. Whatever the year's route, assume central Port of Spain and assume the streets around it will be busy from well before dawn.

Driving and Parking

You can drive, but understand what you're agreeing to: road closures around the Carnival route on Monday morning, a car left unattended for six hours, and getting back into it covered in paint. If you drive, park somewhere secure and well outside the immediate route, lay old towels or plastic over the seats before you leave, and accept that you may be walking a while at both ends.

The Better Option: Get Dropped

Most experienced masqueraders don't drive on J'ouvert morning. Arrange a drop-off and a pick-up in advance — a friend, a hired driver, or a maxi taxi for a group. Agree the pick-up spot before you go, and pick somewhere a short walk off the route rather than on it, because the obvious spot will be inaccessible.

Taxis and Maxis at 3AM

Carnival Monday is not a normal night for transport. Regular route taxis and maxis are unpredictable in the small hours, demand is enormous, and hailing something in the street after the band finishes is a genuinely bad plan. If you're a group, hiring a maxi for the morning splits cheaply and solves both directions at once.

Arriving from Piarco

Piarco International is roughly 30–45 minutes from Port of Spain outside Carnival traffic, and considerably more inside it. Do not schedule a landing anywhere near Carnival Monday — flights into Trinidad for Carnival week fill months ahead and the roads around the capital are unrecognisable that weekend. Arrive by the preceding Friday at the latest, both for logistics and because the fete calendar is half the reason to come.

Where to Stay

• Port of Spain and Woodbrook — walking distance to much of Carnival, most expensive, books earliest, best if you don't want to depend on transport
• St Ann's, Cascade and Maraval — a short drive out, quieter, easier to sleep in, still close
• Chaguanas and the east–west corridor — cheaper and well connected, but you're committing to a drive on Monday morning
• West of the city toward Diego Martin — reasonable balance if you have a car and a driver

Whatever you choose, book far earlier than feels sensible. Carnival week accommodation in and around Port of Spain goes early and prices climb steeply as February approaches.

After the Band Finishes

You will be exhausted, sunburnt and covered. This is the moment your pre-arranged ride earns its money. Have the pick-up point agreed, have one working phone in the group, and have towels waiting in the car. Then shower before you sleep — Carnival Monday afternoon and Tuesday are both still to come.
