J'ouvert 2027: Your Complete Guide to Trinidad Carnival's Most Electric Morning

Everything you need to know about J'ouvert 2027 — what it is, when it starts, how to prepare, and why playing all-inclusive is the best decision you'll make this Carnival.

J'ouvert (pronounced 'joo-vay') is the explosive, paint-soaked street party that kicks off Trinidad Carnival every year. Starting in the pitch darkness around 3–4AM on Carnival Monday, thousands of revellers pour into the streets of Port of Spain for hours of soca music, paint, powder, mud, and pure freedom before the sun comes up.

What is J'ouvert?

The name comes from the French Creole 'jour ouvert' — meaning 'daybreak' or 'the opening of day.' J'ouvert has its roots in 19th-century Canboulay celebrations, where enslaved Africans marked the end of the sugar cane harvest. Today it's one of the most authentic and raucous expressions of Caribbean culture, drawing visitors from across the diaspora and around the world.

When Does J'ouvert 2027 Start?

WE J'ouvert 2027 touches road at approximately 4:00 AM on Carnival Monday, 8th February 2027. The launch point is in Port of Spain and the band chips through the capital as the sun rises — typically finishing by mid-morning. You want to be on the road before 4AM. Do not be late.

All-Inclusive vs Regular J'ouvert

There are two ways to experience J'ouvert: on your own in the street, or with an all-inclusive band like WE J'ouvert. Playing with a band means your food, drinks, paint, powder, security, and music truck are all covered — you just chip and enjoy. Independent revellers join any section they find, but there's no guaranteed coverage and it can get rough.

What's Included in WE J'ouvert

WE J'ouvert is fully all-inclusive: music truck, breakfast, open bar (rum, beers, vodka, shots station, water and juices), paint, Abir powder, a water truck, and dedicated security. You pay once and everything else is sorted. No carrying cash on the road, no scrambling for drinks.

Who Comes to J'ouvert?

WE J'ouvert draws masqueraders from 14+ countries. Trinidadians from across the country, diaspora coming home from New York, Toronto, London, and Miami, and international visitors experiencing Carnival for the first time all play together. The diversity on the road is part of what makes it so special.
